Demonstrate understanding of the impoundment of vehicles

PURPOSE

This unit standard is for learners in the field of law enforcement who will be able to demonstrate understanding of the vehicle impoundment processes with special references to the vehicle-safeguarding environment. They will be able to identify the types of vehicles for impoundment as well as their identification, examination, investigation and disposal processes of these impounded vehicles.

Specific Outcomes and Criteria:

Specific Outcome 1

Assess access control to the vehicle safeguard premises.

Criterion 1

The need for displaying a written notice is explained in terms of access to the vehicle safeguarding premises.

Criterion 2

Reasons for assess control are assessed in line with access restrictions.

Criterion 3

People granted access into the vehicle safeguarding premises are identified in terms of their functions.

Criterion 4

The authentication of documentation is assessed in line with access control principles.

Criterion 5

Reasons for accompanying people into the vehicle safeguarding premises are explained in relation to safe guarding of vehicles.

Specific Outcome 2

Explain the receiving process of vehicles.

Criterion 1

Vehicles accepted into the vehicle safeguarding premises are listed according to categories.

Criterion 2

Documentation is assessed in terms of its evidential value regarding the receiving of vehicles.

Criterion 3

The value of an inspection regarding the actual condition of a vehicle and the condition of the vehicle as stated on documentation is explained in line with liability principles.

Criterion 4

The handling of other items within or attached to vehicles are explained in terms of safe keeping and record keeping purposes.

Criterion 5

The need for marking of vehicles is explained in line with exhibit management and record keeping principles.

Methods of handling of identified and unidentified vehicles are differentiated for accountability purposes.

Criterion 1

Vehicles are categorized according to the purpose of which the vehicle has been impounded.

Criterion 2

The roles and functions of the “investigation team” is explained in relation to the categories of impounded vehicles.

Criterion 3

The purpose of documentation is described in terms of its evidential value during the vehicle investigation process.

Criterion 4

The recognition process used to identify vehicles are explained in order to ensure its correct disposal of the vehicle.

Criterion 5

The disposal process of identified vehicles is explained in relation to the handing over of vehicles to the lawful possessor or owner.

Criterion 1

The legal prescripts regarding the disposal of vehicles are identified in terms of sections of the current Criminal Procedure Act.

Criterion 2

The purpose of documentation is described in terms of its evidential value during the vehicle disposal process.

Ways of dealing with vehicles, which are disposed of, are identified in line with legal prescripts.
