Demonstrate understanding of vehicle identification
Purpose
This unit standard is for learners in the field of law enforcement who will be able to demonstrate understanding of the vehicle identification process with special references to types of vehicles. They will be able to explain the basic pointers of vehicle identification as well as identify vehicles in line with investigation processes.

Describe types of motor vehicles.
Examine the basic points of vehicle identification.
Assess vehicle identification in relation to the investigation process.

Describe types of motor vehicles.
Criterion 1
The term motor vehicle is explained in relation to its definition as stated in the current National Road Traffic Act.
Criterion 2
Motor vehicles are categorized according to the make, model, series and type.
Criterion 3
The terms “manufacturers”, “builders” and “importers” are explained in relation to their role within the vehicle identifications process.

Examine the basic points of vehicle identification.
Criterion 1
The identification numbers of vehicles are explained in terms of current legal prescripts.
Criterion 2
Other possible identification numbers or marks on vehicles are examined for the purpose of vehicle identification.
Criterion 3
SAPVIN and unique numbers are examined in terms of their purpose.

Assess vehicle identification in relation to the investigation process.
